I had such a blast doing this picture--I can't believe how fun it was. My shading's a little shaky--I'm still learning--but this was so much fun and surprisingly easy and smooth to make.

P.S. It's Sailor Moon, in case you can't tell!

No photographic ref, all from the imagination (though I checked various paper dolls for reference on their outfits). I wanted to practice body language and distinct faces and shading, and the urge to draw the Sailor Senshi in my style hit me this afternoon, so I went for it.

I made several cosmetic changes to the characters--Ami's hair is now dark brown for the same reason Minako has brassy hair--I wanted to make them at least semi-realistic. If Ami were to lighten her hair at all, it would only be a little bit. (I also wanted to give Usagi visible roots but eventually decided against it.) Also, I don't know about the rest of the world, but hair as long as Minako's says nerd girl to me, which is cool, I like nerd girls--but Minako's not that a nerd girl, so I gave her shaggy layers, which in retrospect may not have been the best decision. Also, Minako and Rei are the glamorous ones, so I thought I'd give Ami and Makoto fairly normal faces (and in Makoto's case, she is now a "handsome woman"), and Usagi's just supposed to be cute.

But, man, if these guys were cosplayers, they'd lose so many points. Usagi's brooch is all wrong for her school uniform, Minako clearly did not bleach her hair for long enough, and Ami refuses to wear a blue wig. :3

I haven't had this much fun drawing in a long time. :3

A blast from the past! I admit to a moment of "Ack, wrong hair colors!" at first*, but I think you did a great job on showing their personalities, and they definitely look a lot more like Japanese girls than the anime versions.

*Of course, hair color and style is frequently the best/only way to tell anime characters apart, so even small changes can be disorienting! ;)

Haha yeah, I was hoping I could make them look more like real Japanese girls. Whether that was the right goal to strive for, I dunno? (Oh, but I do remember though that the Sailor Senshi all had different eye shapes--Ami's were really round, and Rei's were really angular.) :D
