(no subject)

I had such a blast doing this picture--I can't believe how fun it was. My shading's a little shaky--I'm still learning--but this was so much fun and surprisingly easy and smooth to make.

P.S. It's Sailor Moon, in case you can't tell!

No photographic ref, all from the imagination (though I checked various paper dolls for reference on their outfits). I wanted to practice body language and distinct faces and shading, and the urge to draw the Sailor Senshi in my style hit me this afternoon, so I went for it.

I made several cosmetic changes to the characters--Ami's hair is now dark brown for the same reason Minako has brassy hair--I wanted to make them at least semi-realistic. If Ami were to lighten her hair at all, it would only be a little bit. (I also wanted to give Usagi visible roots but eventually decided against it.) Also, I don't know about the rest of the world, but hair as long as Minako's says nerd girl to me, which is cool, I like nerd girls--but Minako's not that a nerd girl, so I gave her shaggy layers, which in retrospect may not have been the best decision. Also, Minako and Rei are the glamorous ones, so I thought I'd give Ami and Makoto fairly normal faces (and in Makoto's case, she is now a "handsome woman"), and Usagi's just supposed to be cute.

But, man, if these guys were cosplayers, they'd lose so many points. Usagi's brooch is all wrong for her school uniform, Minako clearly did not bleach her hair for long enough, and Ami refuses to wear a blue wig. :3

I haven't had this much fun drawing in a long time. :3

awww, this makes me think of freshman year when one of my friends kept sending me links to sailor moon music videos. They were really cute. As are these :D I especially love the fourth one.

Ohhhhh I love this. Thank you for sharing! And yeah, when I first saw Makoto's face I was all "SD;FLKJAC;LKJ?!" but yeah, it's all perfect. I really like the shading, and the different angles of the lighting. <3

HEART! triplemegaheart!

[identity profile] elfiepike.livejournal.com 2007-11-02 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
ugh, AMAZING. they're all excellent, but i have to admit i like rei and ami the most, i think because rei's surlyness and ami's shyness come through so clearly. (although, ahahah, usagi is totally adorable. who am i kidding, they're all adorable.) i really like the layout of how you've shaded them all, with usagi as the light source.

[identity profile] mutecornett.livejournal.com 2007-11-02 07:19 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, yeah, I think I'm going to soften up her face a little bit--it's a bit too "handsome" right now. I'm glad you like!

[identity profile] mutecornett.livejournal.com 2007-11-02 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
Thank youuu!!! :D

[identity profile] mutecornett.livejournal.com 2007-11-02 07:22 am (UTC)(link)
Hee, thanks! It was my favorite show in sixth grade, so, sharing the memories and all. ♥

[identity profile] alasen.livejournal.com 2007-11-02 07:32 am (UTC)(link)
This is super awesome. I love that their personalities are revealed even with the differences you've made.
(although, from memory, technically if Usagi has that brooch then Minako shouldn't be wearing that uniform)

Have you seen the live action show at all? - in that, they didn't have weird hair colours etc until they transformed into their Senshi form.

[identity profile] coloredink.livejournal.com 2007-11-02 07:53 am (UTC)(link)
OMGGGGGG I LOVE YOU FOREVER

Ami and Rei are just perfect, and so's Usagi, and and and okay they're all perfect I love how much thought went into this. <3

Thanks, I'm glad you like it! Rei and Ami are my favorites, so I probably ended up giving them a little special treatment, heh. :3

[identity profile] mutecornett.livejournal.com 2007-11-02 09:14 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't! I actually didn't know there was a live-action show. :3 As for the brooch, ahahaha, whoops--seriously, if these were cosplayers they'd be losing points for accuracy right and left.

Aww, cute! I like Rei best- she looks amazing and amusingly very much like the japanese tv version:) I´ve been watching PGSM (the live action thingy) as a distraction during my exam and loved it to pieces. Give it a try- there a lot of youtube vids with coverage from the show(just don´t watch the SM musical clips... scary!)

(and in Makoto's case, she is now a "handsome woman")

Oh my goodness, she certainly is. I love this.

Hee, I will! It sounds like a good break from schoolwork. :D

[identity profile] mutecornett.livejournal.com 2007-11-02 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, thank you! I was worried about that choice, but I still feel like it's the right thing to do for how I see her character, especially since curly hair and long skirts don't translate into "tough tomboy" over here.

Hee, thanks!

this is just too wonderful for words. beautifully done *and* realistic! ah, happy nostalgia.

hearts you

AWESOME. Just yesterday I was singing the Sailor Moon theme song and reminiscing :)

[identity profile] fishiemishie.livejournal.com 2007-11-04 07:57 am (UTC)(link)
This is gorgeous! :D I think they look so much more personable when they're at least semi-realistic.

Ami's my favorite, and I love how you've captured this hesitancy in her body language. Rei looking right at you, arms crossed, body language closed...Makoto and her homely-lunch. And the difference between glamorous and cute in Minako and Usagi's poses.

I also like how the different frames are all just sections of a continuous one, with the shading and height consistencies.

::cough:: I can't really comment on art at all, but I did really like this!

These are really nice. Not my fandom at all, so I can't comment on technical accuracy or whatever, but they're pretty and made me smile, so thank you :D

[identity profile] simmysim.livejournal.com 2007-11-05 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh wow, you did such an amazing job of getting their personalities through. Rei and Ami are my favorites, their expressions. I'd think of those two immediately, even if I saw these images totally out of context. Awesome job.

Oh my childhood! I really like these! :)

A blast from the past! I admit to a moment of "Ack, wrong hair colors!" at first*, but I think you did a great job on showing their personalities, and they definitely look a lot more like Japanese girls than the anime versions.

*Of course, hair color and style is frequently the best/only way to tell anime characters apart, so even small changes can be disorienting! ;)

Thanks! Haha, yeah, the whole picture was like a huge nostalgia trip. :D

[identity profile] mutecornett.livejournal.com 2007-11-06 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha yeah, I was hoping I could make them look more like real Japanese girls. Whether that was the right goal to strive for, I dunno? (Oh, but I do remember though that the Sailor Senshi all had different eye shapes--Ami's were really round, and Rei's were really angular.) :D
